Ghana has launched a US$3.4 billion clean energy investment programme aimed at transforming the country’s power sector and accelerating its renewable energy transition. Unveiling the five-year plan at the Renewable Energy Forum Africa 2025 in Accra, Energy and Green Transition Minister Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor said the initiative will add 1,400MW of renewable power, deploy 400 mini-grids, install more than 100 fast-charging stations for electric vehicles, and expand solar-powered water pumping for agriculture.
The Minister highlighted Ghana’s recent progress, including hosting Africa’s largest single rooftop solar project and President John Dramani Mahama’s commissioning of a 200MW solar plant expected to scale up to 1,000MW by 2032. He noted that Africa’s vast solar potential must translate into real development gains, stressing that with coordinated action, harnessing even a fraction of the continent’s renewable resources could eliminate energy poverty.
