Ghana Pledges Unified African Climate Push

Ghana has pledged to spearhead a stronger, unified African stance on climate action after being elected to chair the Africa Group of Negotiators (AGN), positioning itself to drive resilience and sustainable development across the continent.

Speaking at a high-level session of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change on the sidelines of the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Works, Housing and Water Resources Minister Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei said coordinated political leadership was vital to securing an equitable and development-focused climate future for Africa.

Hon. Adjei briefed African leaders on outcomes from the 30th Conference of the Parties under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Second Africa Climate Summit, and progress on implementing the Nairobi Declaration on Climate Change.

He stressed that the AGN remained central to shaping Africa’s negotiation strategies on adaptation, climate finance, loss and damage, technology transfer and capacity building, while preparing common positions ahead of major global climate summits.

Kenya’s President William Ruto, who chaired the meeting, urged African states to seize growing global climate investment flows and position the continent as a hub for green industrialisation powered by its vast renewable energy resources.

President Ruto noted that global energy transition investments reached $2.3 trillion in 2025, underscoring a rapid shift toward low-carbon production systems and electrified value chains where reliable and affordable power drives competitiveness.

Chair of the Africa Group of Negotiators (AGN), Dr. Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, said his tenure would prioritise transparency and inclusivity to ensure no African country was sidelined in internal coordination processes.

He pledged to publish details of support received by the AGN to enhance accountability, as Africa prepares to host the 31st UN climate summit in Addis Ababa in 2027.

Dr. Amoah added that youth engagement, international cooperation and co-creation would underpin the bloc’s strategy, with a focus on grooming the next generation of African climate negotiators.

Established to strengthen Africa’s collective bargaining power under the UNFCCC framework, the AGN serves as the continent’s formal platform for advancing a unified climate position in global negotiations.
