Ghana has reaffirmed its dedication to peaceful nuclear energy by participating in the 69th Regular Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, held in Vienna, Austria, from September 15 to 19, 2025. Richard Gyan Mensah, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, led the country’s delegation, which included representatives from over 150 Member States, nuclear experts, and international partners.
During his address, Gyan Mensah honored the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, who was supposed to lead the delegation. The Deputy Minister presented Ghana’s nuclear energy roadmap, emphasizing the government’s commitment to utilizing nuclear science and technology for socio-economic development.
He stated, “Ghana is committed to building a safe, reliable, and secure nuclear energy programme,” highlighting the importance of global partnerships in enhancing nuclear safety and technology. In addition to the plenary sessions, Ghana engaged in high-level bilateral discussions with the IAEA Director-General and US officials from the Department of Energy and Atomic Energy Commission.
These discussions aimed to advance Ghana’s nuclear power initiatives, improve technical cooperation, and bolster regulatory and safety measures. Gyan Mensah underscored that, under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, the government is focused on ensuring that nuclear energy significantly contributes to the nation’s energy security and socio-economic progress.
