The European Union plans to secure more gas from countries like the U.S. while accelerating renewable energy expansion to reduce reliance on Russian fuel, according to its energy commissioner.

This move aligns with the EU’s goal to phase out Russian fossil fuels by 2027 following Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Despite a drop in Russian pipeline gas deliveries, the EU increased its imports of Russian liquefied natural gas last year. To expedite the transition, Brussels is preparing changes to permitting rules for renewable energy projects.

Additionally, the EU is intensifying efforts to secure alternative energy sources for industries and home heating where gas remains essential.
