Ethiopia is intensifying its focus on renewable energy as a means to achieve sustainable economic growth amid climate challenges. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is spearheading initiatives through the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA), aimed at mobilizing funding and enhancing energy access across the continent. Recent activities in Ethiopia involve collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Energy, targeting project developers, financial institutions, and government stakeholders to improve project bankability.
A high-level consultative conference held in Addis Ababa aimed to bolster the capacities of local stakeholders in structuring renewable energy projects, facilitating access to financing through IRENA’s Climate Investment Platform and Energy Transition Accelerator Financing Platform. The conference included technical training and dialogue opportunities for project developers and financiers, with selected projects potentially showcased at the upcoming APRA Investment Forum in Sierra Leone.
IRENA’s initiatives are designed to address the financing gaps in renewable energy projects, with platforms like the Climate Investment Platform supporting medium-scale projects and the Energy Transition Accelerator Financing Platform mobilizing over $4 billion in pledges. By fostering international cooperation and enhancing local capacities, APRA aims to accelerate energy transitions, support green industrialization, and improve resilience in Ethiopia and other African nations.
As the continent remains the least electrified region, APRA’s efforts are critical for promoting sustainable investment and enabling African countries to achieve their socio-economic development goals. The workshop emphasized tailored support for developers and encouraged collaboration among policymakers to streamline project financing and implementation, positioning Ethiopia as a leader in renewable energy development.
