The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has disclosed that only 40 out of 2,637 containers consigned to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have officially been cleared at Tema Port.
This revelation was made by the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Richmond Rockson, during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, May 27, 2027.
Mr.Rockson stated that data from port authorities shows a major discrepancy between ECG’s records and the actual containers found, prompting a deeper investigation.
The probe, involving National Security, the Ministry of Transport, GPHA, and Customs, was triggered by initial reports of over 1,300 unaccounted containers, later found to exceed 2,600.
He cited earlier discoveries in March and April, when ECG containers were found in an Indian-owned warehouse, allegedly purchased through auction processes.
Mr.Rockson warned that ECG’s procurement records do not align with containers retrieved, raising questions about years of mismanagement.
He criticized past leadership at ECG for acquiring items the company didn’t need, including goods that remained unused for over a decade.
According to him, some of these purchases included equipment ECG already had in excess or wouldn’t need for the next 15 years.
This situation, he noted, reflects a pattern of wasteful procurement and poor oversight within the company.
The Ministry continues to investigate, stressing that identifying the full inventory is key to reforming ECG’s procurement systems.
