Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has inspected ongoing works on the upgrade of the 161-kilovolt (kV) Ahodwo-Anwomaso transmission line in the Ashanti Region, a project aimed at strengthening electricity supply in Kumasi and surrounding areas.
The project, which is expected to be completed within three months, will increase the transmission capacity of the line from 364 megawatts (MW) to about 1,000 MW, improving the system’s ability to meet growing electricity demand and support potential power exports.
The upgrade involves replacing the existing 19-kilometre single-circuit transmission line, rated at 364 megavolt-amperes (MVA), with a higher-capacity double-circuit line rated at 2 x 488 MVA.
As part of the improvement works, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) will also upgrade a transformer at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) substation from 66 MVA to 145 MVA. The upgrade is expected to enhance grid stability, reliability and resilience in the region.
Speaking during the inspection, Hon. Dr. Jinapor said steps were being taken to reduce the impact of the construction works on electricity consumers while the final phase of the project is being executed.
He explained that some customers may experience temporary and localised power interruptions from Monday, July 20, 2026, to allow the works to be completed safely.
“These temporary inconveniences are necessary to deliver a stronger, more reliable electricity network that will support the continued growth and development of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region,” he said.
The minister appealed to residents and businesses to remain patient during the construction period, assuring them that GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would work to minimise disruptions and restore power supply promptly.
He thanked consumers in Kumasi and the Ashanti Region for their understanding and support as efforts continue to improve Ghana’s electricity infrastructure.
