ECG to Upgrade Transformers in Accra, Announces Planned Outages

The Electricity Company of Ghana has announced plans to replace and upgrade power transformers in parts of Accra to improve electricity supply reliability.

The initiative, approved by Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, targets rapidly expanding communities experiencing increased power demand.

In a statement issued on March 27, ECG said the project will cover twelve transformers across six primary substations in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa and Lashibi.

The company indicated that the upgrades will raise transformer capacity from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA, enhancing load-handling ability and reducing system overloads.

ECG said the move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the stability and resilience of the national electricity network.

The first phase of the exercise is scheduled to run from April 8 to April 10, during which planned outages will be implemented in affected areas.

The company noted that temporary power cuts are necessary to ensure safety and allow for the successful completion of the upgrade works.

A detailed timetable outlining outage periods and impacted communities will be communicated through ECG’s official channels.

ECG assured residents and businesses that it will work to minimise disruptions and urged customers to prepare accordingly.

The utility said the programme is a critical step toward delivering more reliable and efficient electricity services amid rising energy demand.
