The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated the second phase of its smart prepaid meter pilot project in Brofoyedru, Ahenema Kokoben District, as part of its Loss Reduction Project (LRP). This phase involves the installation of 100 smart prepaid meters, including 90 single-phase and 10 three-phase units, to replace outdated and faulty meters at no cost to selected customers. The pilot, which began recently, will last for two months, after which ECG will assess the outcomes for potential wider implementation. The district was chosen due to its rapidly growing customer base, currently exceeding 50,000, with projections of reaching 80,000 to 100,000 by next year. Key features of the new meters include an activity recorder that detects illegal connections and tampering, automatically shutting down the meter and preventing further credit purchases. The smart meters are linked to the Meter Management System (MMS), enabling customers to buy credit online and monitor their energy consumption in real time. Mr. George Amoah, ECG’s General Manager for the Ashanti West Region, assured that any unused credit from old meters would be transferred to the new devices. He encouraged the public to report illegal connections, emphasizing rewards for credible whistleblowers. ECG is closely monitoring the performance of the new meters to ensure a successful pilot that benefits both the company and its customers.
