The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has severed the national grid connection to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) due to an outstanding debt of GH¢1 billion. This disconnection is part of ECG’s broader initiative to hold all defaulters accountable for their debts. On June 16, 2025, ECG’s Revenue Team from the Accra East Division discovered significant illegal electricity connections at Rehoboth Estate in Kweiman, where over 100 newly constructed homes were found to be illegally connected. Additionally, a block factory within the estate was also using an illegal connection for its operations. Members of the ECG team expressed frustration over the situation, noting the absence of meters and unsafe wiring conditions. Following the discovery of these widespread connections, the block factory was disconnected from the power supply. Eunice Nana Agyemang, the Accra East Revenue Protection Manager, indicated that this operation has been ongoing for the past two weeks, highlighting the scale of electricity theft in the area. The actions taken by ECG underscore the company’s commitment to addressing power theft and ensuring compliance with electricity regulations.
