China, Canada Seal Initial Pacts to Revive Cooperation Across Key Sectors

China and Canada agreed on Thursday to deepen cooperation across a range of areas, including energy, crime prevention and food safety, during a visit by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to Beijing.

The two sides signed six initial cooperation agreements, marking a step toward stabilising and rebuilding ties after years of strained relations between the two countries.

According to a pool report, the agreements also cover culture and forestry, signalling a broader effort to re-engage through practical and less politically sensitive areas.

On energy, Beijing and Ottawa agreed to hold regular energy policy talks and expressed support for cooperation on low-carbon energy sources and related technologies.

The move reflects shared interests in advancing clean energy transitions while addressing energy security concerns.

The crime-related cooperation aims to strengthen coordination on law enforcement and transnational crime, an area both governments say is important for public safety.

Agreements on food safety and forestry are intended to improve standards, information sharing and regulatory cooperation, supporting trade and consumer confidence.

The talks come as both countries look to manage differences while expanding areas of mutual benefit.

Officials on both sides described the agreements as an initial framework, with more detailed cooperation expected to follow.

The visit underscores cautious efforts by China and Canada to reset dialogue and rebuild trust through incremental, sector-focused engagement.
