The Association of Ghana Industries–Energy Service Centre (AGI-ESC), in collaboration with the World Bank, has introduced the Energy Smart Businesses pilot initiative aimed at assisting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in reducing energy consumption, cutting costs, and enhancing sustainability. This six-month pilot program will benefit 35 SMEs operating in sectors such as agribusiness, garments and textiles, and hospitality by providing free on-site energy audits, customized efficiency recommendations, staff training, and access to a national energy efficiency peer-learning network.
Baerbel Freyer, Chief Technical Officer of AGI-ESC, highlighted the importance of SMEs to Ghana’s economy, noting that high energy costs often hinder their growth. The initiative is designed to equip these businesses with the necessary tools and expertise to operate more efficiently and competitively, positioning them as role models within their industries.
Fully funded by the World Bank, the program aims to demonstrate the viability of energy efficiency interventions that can be scaled up across the country while also enhancing local capabilities in sustainable energy management. Applications for participation are open until September 30, 2025, with priority given to businesses that have high energy consumption and significant potential for positive impact. Interested parties can apply through the AGI-ESC website.
