The United Arab Emirates has announced it will leave the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and OPEC Plus from May 1, 2026, marking a significant shift in global oil dynamics.
The decision follows a strategic review aimed at expanding production capacity and aligning the country’s long-term economic goals with its evolving energy strategy. The UAE currently produces around 3.4 million barrels per day, with capacity to reach five million, though output remains constrained by regional shipping disruptions.
Tensions over production quotas with Saudi Arabia are also reported to have influenced the move. The UAE has been part of OPEC since 1967.
