Tanzania is planning to construct a cross-border natural gas pipeline to export gas to Uganda and Kenya, as part of efforts to expand access to cleaner energy and strengthen regional energy cooperation.
The proposed project was announced by Charles Sangweni, Director General of the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), who said the pipeline would transport Tanzanian natural gas to the two neighbouring countries under a broader regional energy initiative.
Speaking at the Second African Youth in Oil and Gas International Conference in Unguja, Zanzibar, Sangweni said the initiative forms part of Tanzania’s strategy to attract greater investment into its oil and gas sector while positioning the country as a key regional supplier of natural gas.
He noted that the pipeline is expected to enhance regional energy security, promote economic integration among East African countries and support the transition to lower-emission energy sources through increased use of natural gas.
Mr. Sangweni also emphasised the importance of youth participation in securing the long-term future of Africa’s oil and gas industry.
He said greater involvement of young people would help develop the technical skills, expertise and innovation needed to sustain industry growth while ensuring that Africans derive greater value from the continent’s natural resources.
The conference brought together government officials, regulators, industry leaders and other stakeholders from across Africa to discuss investment opportunities, the energy transition and strategies for increasing youth participation in the oil and gas sector.
No estimated cost or implementation timeline for the proposed pipeline has been announced.
