Ghanaian lawmaker calls for urgent action over illegal mining threat to Bui power facility

A senior Ghanaian lawmaker has called on the government to declare illegal mining activities around the Bui Power Plant a national emergency, warning that the situation now threatens the country’s energy security.

Hon. Collins Adomako-Mensah, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee and MP for Afigya Kwabre North, made the call on Monday, January 19, during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.

His comments followed the airing of a Joy News Hotline documentary that exposed extensive galamsey operations along the banks of the Bui dam and its reservoir.

Hon. Adomako-Mensah said all state institutions responsible for combating illegal mining must urgently move in to protect the power facility and its surrounding environment.

He stressed that the impact of the activities has moved beyond water pollution and is now directly undermining electricity generation and national energy stability.

The MP pledged the support of the parliamentary minority for any measures aimed at clamping on the illegal operations.

He warned that delays in enforcement could have serious long-term consequences for the Bui Power Plant, a key contributor to Ghana’s power supply.

The lawmaker urged swift, coordinated action to prevent further damage to the strategic energy asset.
