A nationwide strike in France has begun to affect the country’s energy sector, with workers at EDF cutting power generation early Thursday.

According to company data, nuclear production was reduced by 1.1 gigawatts after staff lowered output at the Flamanville 1 reactor in Normandy.

The action is part of a broader labor movement expected to disrupt multiple industries across the country, reflecting worker dissatisfaction over ongoing national issues.

EDF confirmed that the disruption in nuclear supply was so far limited to a single site, while hydropower facilities remained unaffected.

France currently operates around 57 gigawatts of nuclear capacity, a system that delivers nearly 70% of its total electricity needs.

The temporary reduction highlights the vulnerability of the energy sector when nationwide labor disputes escalate.

Although the cut represents only a fraction of EDF’s overall capacity, it signals the potential for broader consequences if strikes expand.

Energy analysts note that nuclear power is central to France’s energy security, making any production dip particularly sensitive.

The strike comes at a time when European energy markets remain closely watched due to supply concerns and price pressures.

With wider industrial action expected, authorities and businesses alike are preparing for further disruptions across essential services.
