The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully commissioned a new 33 kV sub-transmission feeder to improve power supply in Obuasi and surrounding areas. This significant development occurred on August 24, 2025, after the upgrade of a 50/66 MVA transformer by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo). The initiative was prompted by previous power supply issues caused by a fire that damaged GRIDCo’s transformer, which had been servicing the Obuasi Bulk Supply Point.
The disruption affected thousands of homes and businesses in the region, necessitating immediate action. To mitigate these challenges, ECG deployed a dedicated team of engineers who traveled weekly from Kumasi to Obuasi to ensure operational stability and address technical problems swiftly. Over the course of six weeks, these engineers collaborated closely with GRIDCo and its contractors to restore power effectively.
As part of the project, ECG retired its outdated 11 kV cables, replacing them with new 33 kV cables connected to GRIDCo’s gantry and its own GIS panels at the Obuasi Substation. This upgrade is expected to enhance the reliability and capacity of power supply in the region, ultimately benefiting the local community and businesses.
