Refinery on Iran’s Lavan Island hit in attack; no casualties reported

An oil refinery on Iran’s Lavan Island was struck in what authorities described as an “enemy attack” on Wednesday, according to the country’s oil ministry news outlet Shana.

The National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company said the facility was hit at around 10 a.m. local time (0630 GMT), triggering a fire at the site. Emergency response, safety and firefighting teams were quickly deployed to contain the blaze and secure the area.

The company added that no casualties had been reported following the incident, though operations and damage assessments were still underway as crews worked to stabilise the facility.

The refinery is located on Lavan Island in the Persian Gulf, an important hub for Iran’s oil processing and export infrastructure.

When asked whether Israel’s military was involved in the strike, Israeli military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani told reporters the country was not responsible.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions in the region and ongoing conflict involving Iran and its adversaries, raising concerns about the vulnerability of energy infrastructure and potential disruptions to oil markets.
