President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a new incentive for whistleblowers during the inauguration of the Ghana Gold Board Task Force in Accra on July 8, 2025. Those providing credible information leading to the arrest of illegal gold traders will receive 10% of any recovered gold or cash. This initiative aims to combat illegal gold trading, smuggling, and price disruptions in the gold market, ensuring that Ghana fully benefits from its gold resources.
During his remarks, Mahama emphasized the importance of citizen involvement, encouraging individuals to report illicit activities. He stated, “Whistleblowers, get ready; if you report someone and gold or cash is retrieved, you will receive 10% of its value.” The President also warned task force members against abusing their authority, highlighting that misconduct would lead to immediate sanctions, including dismissal and prosecution.
He reiterated the government’s strong stance against illegal gold trading, stating that offenders would face severe consequences. Mahama urged all interested in gold trading to obtain a license from the Ghana Gold Board, stressing that unlicensed trading is prohibited.
He issued a stern warning to those involved in the illicit gold trade, noting that violations could result in hefty fines or prison sentences. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to enforcing regulations and promoting lawful gold trading practices in Ghana.
