Mahama Plans ISO-Certified Gold Assay Lab by 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish an ISO-certified gold assay laboratory by 2026 to enhance gold refining and boost export earnings. This initiative, revealed during the inauguration of the GoldBod Task Force on July 8, 2025, aims to ensure compliance with international export standards. Mahama emphasized Ghana’s rich natural resources, particularly gold and diamonds, and the necessity to utilize them effectively for economic growth.

He outlined a vision for the future where Ghana refines 100% of its gold domestically before export, which would significantly increase revenue. “We aim to transition to bullion exports and refine more gold locally,” he stated, highlighting the financial advantages of exporting refined gold over doré bars. This move aligns with the National Democratic Congress’ 2024 manifesto to formalize the mining sector and strengthen Ghana’s position in the global gold market.
