Libya Announces Three New Oil and Gas Discoveries

Libya’s state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC) has announced three new oil and gas discoveries in partnership with major international energy companies, reinforcing the country’s position as a key player in global energy supply.

The discoveries were made in collaboration with Algeria’s Sonatrach, Italy’s Eni, and Spain’s Repsol across key basins in Libya.

The first discovery was recorded in the Ghadames Basin in northwestern Libya, near the Algerian border. The project, undertaken with Sonatrach, revealed production levels of approximately 13 million cubic feet of gas per day, alongside 327 barrels of condensate.

A second gas discovery was made offshore in western Libya in partnership with Eni North Africa. Tests from two separate wells indicated flow rates of 14 million and 24 million cubic feet of gas per day, highlighting the potential of Libya’s offshore reserves.

The third discovery, carried out with Repsol’s Libyan subsidiary in the Murzuq Basin, about 800 kilometres south of Tripoli, yielded an estimated production rate of 763 barrels of oil per day following drilling tests.

The developments are expected to boost Libya’s energy output at a time when global supply remains under pressure. Oil continues to dominate Libya’s economy, accounting for more than 95 per cent of its total economic output.
