The Mining in Motion Summit, scheduled for June 2–4, 2025, in Accra, Ghana, will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to explore the transformative power of technology and innovation in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector.
Organized by the Ashanti Green Initiative under the leadership of Oheneba Kwaku Duah, Prince of the Ashanti Kingdom, the summit represents a concerted effort to address pressing environmental and productivity challenges facing the sector.
In partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the World Bank, and the World Gold Council, the summit aims to foster dialogue, promote collaboration, and highlight practical solutions for sustainable mining.
A central focus of the event will be the panel discussion titled “Technology & Innovation: Advancing Efficiency and Removing Mercury from the ASGM Process.” The panel will feature key representatives from the Ghana Chamber of Mines, ECOWAS Chamber of Mines, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), and Ghana’s Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
This session is expected to provide critical insights into emerging technologies and best practices that can enhance productivity while minimizing environmental degradation and health risks.
The importance of modern technology in the sector is already being realized through initiatives such as the drone piloting training program launched by the Minerals Commission of Ghana. This initiative targets university students, commission personnel, and other mining stakeholders. As part of a broader national agenda for automation and digitization, the program seeks to improve regulatory oversight and combat illegal mining activities. The use of drones is anticipated to provide real-time data and monitoring capabilities, facilitating more responsible and transparent mining operations.
The Mining in Motion Summit 2025 promises to be a landmark event, providing a platform for stakeholders to share knowledge, build partnerships, and forge a path toward a more sustainable mining future. By spotlighting technological advancements and promoting responsible mining practices, the summit underscores Ghana’s leadership in reimagining the potential of its gold mining industry.
Ultimately, the summit represents more than just a meeting of minds, it is a bold step forward in the collective journey to secure a greener, safer, and more prosperous future for Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale miners.
