Nexans Kabelmetal Ghana Ltd, a subsidiary of the global Nexans Group, has commissioned a 532kWp grid-tied solar power system at its factory in Tema, Ghana. The project is a significant step toward the company’s sustainability goals, now supplying 25% of its total energy needs from renewable sources.
This solar initiative, delivered in partnership with Daystar Power—an African solar energy provider under the Shell Group—will reduce the factory’s greenhouse gas emissions by 11.7 tons every quarter. The transition to solar helps the company cut reliance on Ghana’s national grid.
The system includes 900 photovoltaic panels connected using Nexans’ own cabling solutions, generating over 47.7 megawatt-hours of electricity each month. This renewable energy now powers 55% of the plant’s daytime operations.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, and the French Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Jules-Armand Aniambossou, highlighting the project’s national and international significance.
CEO of Nexans Kabelmetal Ghana, Mr. Alexander Quarcoopome, described the development as a major milestone in the company’s E3 strategy—enhancing economic performance, minimizing environmental impact, and deepening community engagement.
Ambassador Aniambossou commended Nexans for showcasing how industrial excellence can align with environmental responsibility, calling it a model for private sector climate leadership in Ghana.
Daystar Power’s Ghana Country Head, Victor Ezenwoko, emphasized the project’s impact, noting that it is the company’s first ground-mounted system in Ghana and a strategic move for energy cost savings and carbon reduction.
The solar project positions Nexans as a key driver of energy transition within Ghana’s manufacturing sector, reinforcing its role in promoting sustainable industrial practices.
Globally, Nexans employs over 28,000 people in 41 countries and is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 under the Science Based Targets initiative.
