The Electricity Company of Ghana has introduced a GHS 3.46 billion investment programme aimed at restoring stability in electricity supply following recurring outages and low voltage challenges across parts of the country.
At a press briefing in Accra, Acting Managing Director Mr. Kwame Kpekpena explained that the initiative will concentrate on strengthening the distribution segment, which he described as the most neglected component of Ghana’s power system.
He noted that the true value of electricity is only realised when it is delivered consistently to homes, businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities.
As part of the intervention, ECG plans to install about 2,500 distribution transformers to ease pressure on overloaded networks, while also replacing faulty equipment and reinforcing critical infrastructure under its Operation Keep the Lights On initiative.
The company linked current power supply challenges to years of underinvestment, ageing systems, and rapid urban growth, all of which have placed increasing strain on the distribution network.
According to ECG data, transformer failures have been rising steadily, with 834 units recorded in 2023 and 1,064 in 2024, compared to only about 300 replacements by 2025, further intensifying pressure on the grid.
Beyond transformer deployment, the programme will include the replacement of deteriorated poles, substation upgrades, expansion of feeder capacity, and the use of modern technologies such as drones for network monitoring and inspection.
Work has already begun on key projects, including upgrades at the Nmai Dzorn and Lashibi substations, which have improved supply capacity in several communities.
Mr. Kpekpena acknowledged the inconvenience caused to consumers and apologised for the disruptions, assuring that ECG has developed a clear implementation roadmap supported by government reforms, including adjustments to the Cash Waterfall Mechanism to enable the company retain part of its revenue for infrastructure investment.
He emphasised that the company is fully committed to executing the plan to stabilise the network and improve electricity service delivery in the months ahead.
