Zambia and Zimbabwe are retendering a $5 billion project to build a hydroelectric facility that was earlier granted to General Electric Co. and China’s Power Construction Corp., with new bids expected by September next year, according to an official.
The Zambezi River Authority, a joint venture between countries that manage the Kariba Dam complex, intends to accept offers from potential developers by April 2025 and pick bidders five months later, ZRA Chief Executive Officer Munyaradzi Munodawafa said in an email.
Work on the 2,400-MW Batoka Gorge project was supposed to start in 2020, however it was delayed due to the coronavirus epidemic and finance issues. Zambian Energy Minister Peter Kapala announced that in June the country would cancel the 2019 contract with GE and Power China because proper procurement procedures were not followed when the deal was signed.
