Trump leaves Paris climate agreement, doubles down on fossil fuels

President Donald Trump has announced the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, marking a bold departure from global efforts to combat climate change as catastrophic weather events intensify. Declaring a “national energy emergency,” Trump revealed plans to expand oil and gas drilling, roll back emissions standards he criticized as an “electric vehicle mandate,” and halt offshore wind farm developments.

Trump also signed orders instructing federal agencies to reject international climate finance commitments and formally notified the United Nations of Washington’s intent to leave the agreement, effective in one year. Critics warn the decision could undermine international climate cooperation and embolden major polluters like China and India to weaken their commitments. Argentina, under President Javier Milei, has also indicated it is reevaluating its participation in the accord.
