The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will present an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the 1.5 GW Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Project 1.
In August 2023, Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, a 50:50 joint venture between Shell New Energies US and EDF Renewables, presented a proposal for the construction of lease area OCS-A 0549, which is 14 kilometres from the coast of New Jersey and around 97 kilometres from New York. The project will comprise the installation of up to 157 wind turbine generators and eight offshore substations.
The proposals also include two prospective export cable lanes that would arrive in the US states of New Jersey or New York. BOEM will start a 45-day public comment period for the project proposal, which will go until May 2, to assist identify important material for the environmental review process.
BOEM has announced the identification of an offshore wind region with a potential capacity of roughly 32 GW in the Gulf of Maine. At the federal level, the United States plans to build 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 15 GW of floating wind capacity by 2035. The government also intends to generate 110 GW or more of offshore wind by 2050.
