Britain’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions declined by 5.4% in 2023, owing to lower gas consumption in the electrical industry, according to preliminary government figures released on Thursday.
Britain aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, which would include changes to how people eat and move, as well as how power is generated.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) stated” This decrease in 2023 is primarily due to a reduction in gas demand from the electricity supply, buildings, and product uses sectors,”.
A rebound in French nuclear power output in 2023 allowed Britain to import more energy, reducing the requirement for domestic fossil fuel power generation, while electricity consumption declined, according to DESNZ.
In 2023, total greenhouse gas emissions were predicted to be 384.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
Emissions from the industrial sector fell by 8% mainly due to reduced fuel consumption in the iron and steel industries.
In the domestic transport sector, which includes road travel, aviation and shipping, emissions were down by 1.4%.
Emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas, were estimated at 302.8 million tonnes, 6.6% lower than in 2022
