Senegal is strengthening its position as a significant participant in the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), by becoming an observer member of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), a global alliance of major gas exporters.
Senegal will become the organization’s 20th member, joining eight other African countries: Nigeria, Angola, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, and Mauritania. The ministerial accession approved by Senegal’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Antoine Felix Diome, took place at the forum’s 24th meeting, which was held in Algiers, Algeria on March 1.
The Minister mentioned the close collaboration between the GECF and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), implying that Senegal’s membership in the GECF paves the way for its eventual entrance into OPEC.
Senegal will officially be a full member when the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) natural gas field, located between the Mauritania-Senegal border, begins production next year. The GTA field has an estimated reserve of 900 billion cubic metres.
The GECF presently consists of 12 member governments and eight observer states, which represent approximately 70% of the world’s natural gas proven reserves.
