The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has ordered the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to provide a complete report on its operations, including tariff revenue allocation, regulatory audit data, and operational concerns, by the end of day on April 2, 2024.
The commission explained in a statement that the order, issued under Sections 3 and 24 of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission Act, 1997 (Act 538), was the result of some major observations it had made regarding a general decline in the quality of service delivery, including increasing power outages across ECG service areas from January 1, 2024 to date.
On March 11, 2024, the ECG declared that 630 distribution transformers in its operational zones were full and overloaded as a result of rising electricity consumption. As a result, it stated that some areas of the public may face power interruptions between 7 and 11 p.m.
As a result, the PURC has also directed the ECG to provide information on the ratings and current loadings of the overloaded distribution transformers, the GPS location of all overloaded distribution transformers, the ratings of the new transformers to be installed in each location, the timelines and duration for transformer injection in each location, and a load management timetable that corresponds to the timelines and duration for each transformer injection.
Meanwhile PURC warns sanctions may be imposed if ECG fails to do so.
