President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is slated to inaugurate the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project in Anwomaso, Ashanti Region, on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.
The 250 MW plant, formerly operated by the Dubai-based firm Africa and Middle East Resource Investment (AMERI), has been successfully transferred to the Ghanaian government. This transition follows the terms of the US$510 million Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) agreement inked in 2015.
The power plant is poised to address voltage and power quality concerns in Kumasi and the northern parts of Ghana by increasing system voltages, therefore enhancing overall system stability.
According to the VRA, the establishment of the power plant aligns with recommendations from a comprehensive grid impact analysis conducted by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo). This analysis underscored the necessity of generating a minimum of 250 megawatts (MW) of electricity in the Ashanti Region to fortify the dependability and stability of the national grid.
The project, according to the VRA’s goals is to improve the efficient use of a strategic national asset. It would also enable the optimal use of gas resources concentrated in the country’s west, as well as create job possibilities in Kumasi and its surrounding areas.
The VRA further asserts that situating the power plant in Kumasi will ensure that energy consumers in the central and northern regions of the country receive consistent, high-quality power.
