Less than 1% of the Poorest Households Have Access to Clean Fuels – GSS

New data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) reveals that while the use of clean cooking fuels in the poorest households has barely changed—rising from 0% to just 0.5% over 19 years—the overall national adoption of clean fuels has tripled.

From 7.3% in 2003, the percentage of Ghanaians using cleaner cooking options like LPG, electricity, and biogas surged to 22.5% in 2022. The findings were shared in a press statement marking the International Day of Clean Energy, observed every January 26 to raise awareness of the importance of clean energy solutions.

Urban areas saw a more dramatic increase, with usage doubling from 15.8% to 36.4%. Regionally, the Greater Accra Region recorded the largest jump at 24.8 percentage points, while regions like the Savannah and North East saw only small gains, underscoring the uneven progress in clean energy access across the country.
