A group of Japanese energy corporations, including Mitsubishi’s wind power unit, JERA, and Tokyo Gas, have formed an association to boost the construction of floating offshore wind farms and collaboratively build technologies.
The group of 14 firms have set up the Floating Offshore Wind Technology Research Association, which aims to commercialise large-scale floating offshore wind farms in a wide region by researching technology and defining international standards in collaboration with overseas institutions.
Floating offshore wind power is viewed as a means of ensuring Japan’s steady and sustainable energy supply, and its expansion is expected to improve the local economy and support Japanese companies.
Japan aims to become a major offshore wind power producer, with the government targeting 10 gigawatt (GW) projects by 2030 and up to 45 GW by 2040 as part of its decarbonisation push, for which floating offshore wind is essential.
