China to roll back clean power subsidies after boom

China’s top economic planning agency has announced plans to scale back subsidies for renewable energy projects following an unprecedented surge in solar and wind power installations.

In 2024, China set a new record for solar installations, with capacity increasing by 45% compared to the previous year. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, the country now boasts nearly 887 gigawatts of installed solar power—more than six times the capacity of the United States.

This rapid expansion has propelled China to achieve its 2030 renewable energy target six years ahead of schedule, demonstrating the country’s commitment to clean energy at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has withdrawn the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement for the second time and pledged to roll back restrictions on oil and gas drilling.
