Ethiopia is on the brink of fully transitioning to renewable energy, with nearly 100% of its electricity now sourced from renewables. The country’s Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Assefa Adela, confirmed that Ethiopia’s energy mix currently comprises 90% hydropower, 8% wind power, and 2% thermal energy.
To further enhance energy access, particularly in rural areas, the government is expanding investments in solar, wind, and solar-powered irrigation projects.
According to the International Trade Administration, about 60% of Ethiopia’s population currently has access to electricity, with the country’s total generation capacity averaging 5,200 megawatts. The government remains committed to increasing energy production and extending grid access as part of its long-term sustainability goals..
