Energy Minister Probes ECG’s 2,500 Locked Containers

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has set up a five-member committee to investigate over 2,500 uncleared containers procured by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and left at the port.

These containers, linked to former ECG Managing Director Samuel Dubik Mahama, contain critical materials and have accumulated demurrage charges of GH¢1.5 billion.

Reports indicate that some of the items, including socks, reflective vests, and ECG-branded clothing, could last up to 20 years. Allegations suggest procurement irregularities, with claims that purchases were made without competitive tendering, raising concerns about mismanagement and financial waste.

The committee, chaired by procurement expert Prof. Innocent Senyo Akwasi, has been given one month to assess ECG’s procurement practices and recommend solutions to prevent further financial losses.
