From July 28 to 30, 2025, the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA) hosted a three-day training workshop in Ghana, focused on empowering young women in agritech.
More than 50 young women from across the country participated, gaining hands-on skills in integrating renewable energy into agricultural technology.
Themed “Renewable Energy Integration into Agritech Design for Climate-Smart Solutions,” the workshop addressed both climate challenges and gender inclusion in innovation.
A speech delivered on behalf of UNU-INRA Director Prof. Fatima Denton stressed that women are central to Africa’s agricultural sector but often lack access to modern technologies.
Denton emphasized the urgency of equipping women with tools to build sustainable, energy-efficient agricultural solutions amid growing climate threats.
The training aimed to blend clean energy with agritech to boost productivity, sustainability, and economic opportunities for women.
Participants were encouraged to see themselves as future leaders in green innovation, capable of driving change in their communities.
The programme also provided mentorship and networking to support the creation of viable, renewable energy-powered agribusiness models.
UNU-INRA’s initiative highlights the importance of gender-inclusive climate resilience and the critical role women can play in Africa’s green transition.
This effort aligns with broader goals of sustainable development, energy equity, and innovation in climate-smart agriculture.
