President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt has emphasised the country’s commitment to increasing its partnership with the British energy firm British Petroleum (BP), notably in the area of green hydrogen production.
The collaboration, he said, aims to enable Egypt to efficiently exploit its resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
In a meeting on Monday February 19, 2024 with BP Chief Executive Murray Auchincloss on the sidelines of the Egyptian Petroleum Show (EGYPS) 2024, the North African leader also lauded BP’s outstanding activities, the size and scope of its growing investments in Egypt, as well as its exploration projects in the oil and gas sector.
According to Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy, El-Sisi also acknowledged that BP’s actions correspond with the country’s ambition of emerging into a regional hub for energy production and trading.
The president also stressed Egypt’s commitment to facilitating the operations of international companies and the private sector in the country.
He subsequently appreciated the firm’s activities in the field of clean energy transition and emissions reduction, and confirmed a strong convergence of views on the issue of a just energy transition.
Murray Auchincloss, for his part, praised Egypt’s balanced approach to developing its energy sector and transitioning to clean energy, a strategy that capitalises on the country’s significant potential in this field.
He said this approach is a key driver for BP’s commitment to a broad partnership with the country, given the status of the company as a leading investor in the Egyptian energy market.
The meeting was also attended by Prime Minister, Dr. Moustafa Madbouly, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Tarek El Molla, and BP Regional President, Middle East and North Africa, Mr. Nader Zaki.
