Italian oil and gas giant Eni has announced the start-up of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production in the Republic of Congo. This marks the country’s first LNG shipment, and its introduction into the group of LNG exporting countries.
The President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou-N’Guesso, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Eni, Giuseppe Zafarana, and the CEO of Eni, Claudio Descalzi, celebrated the successful start-up of LNG production in the country.
The Congo LNG project, sanctioned in December 2022, came on stream after just one year, in line with the anticipated timeline: an achievement made possible by Eni’s innovative phased and parallelized method and its efficient execution plan.
The first LNG cargo is already being loaded and will be delivered to the Piombino regasification terminal in Italy.
The project, located inside the Marine XII permit, will have a plateau gas liquefaction capacity of about 4.5 billion cubic meter per year and will result in zero flaring from operating activities in the country.
Eni will market the volumes, which will improve and grow the company’s LNG portfolio while contributing to energy security and transition initiatives.
