The Tanzanian Government has reassured its citizens that it is actively taking decisive measures to ensure that Tanzanians benefit from natural gas resources and play a significant role in fostering the nation’s economic growth.
During a parliamentary session, Deputy Minister for Energy, Ms. Judith Kapiga, affirmed the government’s commitment when questioned by lawmakers led by Josephat Gwajima about initiatives to ensure the populace of Dar es Salaam benefit from natural gas. Mr. Gwajima specifically inquired about the timeline for installing natural gas pipelines in Dar es Salaam to facilitate access to the alternative source of cooking energy for residents.
In response, the Deputy Minister disclosed that the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and TAQA Dalbit Company are currently conducting a comprehensive study on the demand for natural gas in Dar es Salaam, as well as identifying optimal pipeline routes for gas distribution. This study, anticipated to conclude by June 2024, will enable the government to formulate a strategic plan to tackle urban planning challenges in the region.
However, the deputy minister stated that TPDC continues to construct several natural gas delivery projects in Dar es Salaam.
According to Ms Kapinga, TPDC has connected 880 homes to natural gas pipes in Dar es Salaam, including 226 in Sinza, 115 in Mikocheni, 344 in Kurasini, and 155 at Mwenge Mlalakuwa and the University of Dar es Salaam.
She stated that in the near future, 10,000 residences will be connected to natural gas as part of the government’s efforts to provide cooking energy.
The deputy minister also stated that TPDC has constructed a 12.4-kilometer gas pipeline from Mwenge to Mbezi in Dar es Salaam along Bagamoyo Road, with outlets to link more homes to it.
