Parts of Accra to face planned outages as ECG upgrades substations

The Electricity Company of Ghana will carry out a major transformer replacement and substation upgrade programme across parts of Accra, a GH¢240 million investment expected to improve power reliability and capacity.

The exercise, approved by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, will require planned outages in several communities including East Legon Hills, Nanakrom, Borteyman, Lakeside, Katamanso, Teshie, Nungua, Lashibi, Baatsonaa and surrounding areas.

According to ECG, the project involves upgrading twelve power transformers across six primary substations located in Adenta, La, Teshie Nungua, Nmai Dzor, Baatsonaa and Lashibi. The transformers will be upgraded from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA to increase load capacity and reduce system overloads in rapidly growing residential areas.

Speaking on the exercise, Acting Director of Communications at ECG, Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku, explained that the outages will be carried out in phases over a three-day period. He assured residents that although there will be temporary inconvenience, the upgrade will ultimately result in a more stable and reliable electricity supply.

He noted that in areas with single transformers, additional units will be installed, with each customer expected to experience about six hours of interruption during the maintenance period.

Dr. Ayiku apologised for the disruption and urged residents to bear with the utility as the work is completed, adding that the system improvements will benefit consumers in the long term.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, and will run through Friday, April 10, 2026.
