China’s National Energy Administration announced on April 25, 2025, that by March 2025, the country’s wind and solar capacity reached 1,482 GW, exceeding fossil fuel-based thermal power capacity for the first time, driven by rapid renewable expansion. However, in China, grid access issues persist, with renewables contributing only 22.5% of electricity in Q1 2025 despite their capacity dominance. Researchers from Natixis and the Asia Society Policy Institute note challenges like wasted energy and new coal projects, complicating China’s carbon reduction goals.
