Malawi has implemented substantial increases in fuel prices, effective Wednesday, April 1, 2026, following rising global oil costs.
Petrol prices have increased from K4,965 to K6,672 per litre, representing a 34% rise, while diesel has gone up from K4,945 to K6,687 per litre, marking a 35% increase.
Industrial kerosene recorded the sharpest jump, rising from K3,200 to K5,824 per litre, an 82% surge. Jet A 1 fuel is now priced at K7,998 per litre at Lilongwe Airport and K4,523 per litre at Bakili Muluzi International Airport.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), Dad Chinthambi, said the adjustments follow a comprehensive review under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism and may be revised further depending on global market trends.
He explained that ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, along with disruptions to key supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, have driven up international petroleum prices and increased import costs.
Mr. Chinthambi noted that the pricing adjustments are designed to reflect global market realities while ensuring continued availability of fuel across the country.
He added that the Automatic Pricing Mechanism allows domestic fuel prices to respond to international cost movements, helping to maintain supply stability.
